Cigna in Georgia: a $130 licence lane in, and a July 2026 trap most rosters haven't checked

Georgia is one of six states where the Counseling Compact actually issues privileges, which makes it one of the cheapest and fastest states in the country for an out-of-state counselor to enter legally. Cigna's side of the equation is its national process, with behavioral health carved out to Evernorth. And for any Georgia practice with Medicaid in the mix, a state revalidation deadline hit July 1, 2026 with no retroactive cure, which is worth checking before it explains a denial wave.

Common mistake

Cigna medical and Evernorth behavioral are different applications

Georgia BH clinicians targeting Cigna members are really targeting Evernorth, the standalone behavioral network Cigna spun its BH operation into back in 2021, reachable at 1-800-926-2273. The medical flow cannot see a BH file and will not tell you it received one. The second dependency is quieter still: both entities pull your application from CAQH only where you have granted access, so set the authorization, to each by name or globally, before anything is submitted. An unpermissioned profile is indistinguishable from no application at all.

Hard rule

If Medicaid touches your practice, check the GAMMIS past-due list today

Georgia DCH announced that effective July 1, 2026 it would suspend providers who failed their 5-year revalidation, with claims for dates of service on or after that date not paid. The unforgiving part is the cure: your new effective date is the date you submit the revalidation, and retro-enrollment is explicitly not applicable, so the gap between suspension and cure is unbillable forever. The past-due list is public on GAMMIS under Reports for Public Access. This applies across fee-for-service, PeachCare, and the Georgia Families MCOs.

Where a Georgia associate earns: the DBHDD agency tier vs Evernorth

Georgia runs a formal five-level practitioner system inside its community behavioral health agencies. Associates, the LAPC, LAMFT and LMSW, render as Practitioner Level 4 under supervision, billed by the agency with the U4 modifier at Level-4 rates. Evernorth's commercial network publishes no equivalent lane. A group staffing associates is choosing between these two worlds whether it knows it or not.

The fast path for an out-of-state counselor building Georgia revenue

Georgia's compact lane makes the licence the quick part. Spend the saved months on the payer work.

  1. 1 Compact-eligible LPCs: obtain the Georgia privilege, live since June 2026, at $100 plus a $30 compact fee, with no jurisprudence exam.
  2. 2 Authorize Cigna and Evernorth in CAQH ProView the same week, and check the W-9 matches your tax ID and practice address exactly, because a mismatch bounces the contract at the end.
  3. 3 Medical clinicians apply via the CignaforHCP portal. BH clinicians apply to Evernorth.
  4. 4 Expect 45 to 60 days of credentialing by Cigna's own statement, and recredentialing every three years.
  5. 5 If DBHDD agency work is part of the model, that is the agency's enrollment and the practitioner-level system, not an individual panel application.

Georgia rewards the practice that runs licence and panels as one project

The compact privilege compresses what is normally the slowest part of state entry into weeks, which moves the bottleneck to credentialing, and Cigna's 45-to-60-day published window only starts when a complete application lands with the right entity and a CAQH profile it is allowed to read. The practices that treat the privilege date as the starting gun, filing Cigna, Evernorth and any Medicaid work in the same week, arrive at revenue while the ones that celebrated the licence are still assembling applications. One caveat for the roster plan: Georgia's five-level system means an associate hire is agency-side revenue only, so the compact's speed helps the fully licensed clinicians first.

Georgia-Specific Requirements

Cigna Healthcare credentials medical providers through CAQH (the Universal Credentialing DataSource). To begin, call Cigna Healthcare Provider Services at 1-800-882-4462 and choose the credentialing option; complete or authorize your application at CAQH.org so Cigna can pull your verified data electronically. Credentialing typically takes 45 to 60 days once Cigna has your completed materials. Required credentials include an unrestricted state license, valid unrestricted DEA certificate, board certification status, malpractice coverage, and a five-year work history. Recredentialing is required every three years in most states; Cigna emails you to re-attest your CAQH profile and sends up to three reminders before network termination. Check status by emailing PSSCentral@Cigna.com with your name and TIN. Cigna's behavioral health network is operated separately by Evernorth Behavioral Health.
