Definition

The National Provider Identifier is a unique 10-digit identification number issued by CMS to healthcare providers, required for all HIPAA-standard administrative and financial transactions.

Extended Explanation

Your National Provider Identifier is a unique 10-digit number that follows you throughout your entire healthcare career. It was created by HIPAA to standardize how providers are identified across the healthcare system. Before NPI, every payer had their own provider numbering system, which created a logistical nightmare. There are two types. NPI Type 1 is for individual providers: physicians, nurse practitioners, dentists, therapists, and any individual who provides healthcare services. NPI Type 2 is for organizations: group practices, hospitals, nursing homes, and other healthcare entities. An individual provider working at a group practice would have their own Type 1 NPI, and the practice would have a separate Type 2 NPI. You get your NPI by registering through NPPES, the National Plan and Provider Enumeration System, which is run by CMS. Registration is free and can be done online. Once assigned, your NPI never changes and never expires. It stays with you even if you move states, change specialties, or switch practice settings. Your NPI appears on every claim you submit, every prescription you write, every referral you make, and every credentialing application you fill out. It is the single most important identifier in healthcare administration. A common question is whether you need a new NPI when you join a new practice. The answer is no. Your individual NPI is yours permanently. The new practice may need to update their group NPI information to include you as a rendering provider, but your number does not change. If you have not registered for your NPI yet, do it immediately. It is required for Medicare and Medicaid enrollment, CAQH ProView, and every commercial payer application. The registration process takes about 15 minutes online and you typically receive your number within a few days.
