Workers compensation is not one payer: every state runs its own system, some through a state fund, some through private carriers and managed care networks. Provider participation ranges from state certification (for example Ohio's BWC provider certification) to joining carrier-contracted networks, and billing follows the state fee schedule.
The stall to avoid: Check three things per state before treating injured workers: whether the state requires provider certification or registration, which network the employer's carrier uses, and the state fee schedule. Treating outside the required network can make claims unpayable.
