State licensing board: New York State Education Department — Office of the Professions, Mental Health Practitioners. Active state license and NPI required. NY uses LMHC (Licensed Mental Health Counselor). LCSW-R (Licensed Clinical Social Worker — Registered) is the credential for clinical social work private practice. NY State Education Department licenses all behavioral health professions. Manages BH for Medicaid programs, employer groups, and military (TRICARE). Now owned by Molina Healthcare.
