POS (Place of Service)

Two-digit code on the CMS-1500 indicating where the service was rendered. 51 active codes. Most common: 11 (office), 21 (inpatient hospital), 22 (outpatient hospital), 23 (emergency room), 02 (telehealth other than home), 10 (telehealth in patient home), 31 (skilled nursing facility). POS affects payment: a CPT 99213 in POS 11 pays the non-facility rate; in POS 22 it pays the facility rate (about 40% less because the hospital bills for overhead separately).
