Electronic Data Interchange

billing

Definition

The electronic exchange of healthcare information between providers, payers, and clearinghouses using standardized formats defined by HIPAA transaction standards.

Extended Explanation

Electronic Data Interchange, or EDI, is the technology backbone that moves healthcare transactions between providers and payers electronically. When you submit a claim, check eligibility, request a prior authorization, or receive a payment notification, those transactions travel via EDI. HIPAA mandated specific EDI transaction standards for healthcare. The main ones you encounter daily include: 837P (professional claims), 837I (institutional claims), 835 (electronic remittance advice), 270/271 (eligibility inquiry and response), 276/277 (claim status inquiry and response), and 278 (prior authorization request and response). For credentialing, EDI enrollment is a separate process from provider credentialing. After you are credentialed and enrolled with a payer, you typically need to set up EDI connectivity to submit claims electronically. This involves registering your practice with the payer for electronic transactions, setting up your clearinghouse routing, and testing the connection with a few claims before going live. Some payers combine EDI enrollment with provider enrollment. Others treat them as completely separate processes handled by different departments. Ask each payer about their EDI setup process when you receive your enrollment approval. EDI setup is usually handled through your clearinghouse. You provide your NPI, tax ID, and the payer ID, and the clearinghouse configures the routing. Most clearinghouses offer testing tools that let you submit a test claim and verify it reaches the payer correctly before you start billing for real. EDI enrollment is one of those tasks that falls through the cracks because it seems like a technical detail. But if your EDI is not set up, your claims go nowhere even though your credentialing is complete. Include EDI setup on your onboarding checklist right after the enrollment effective date is confirmed.
